067. (26 Feb) Voice in the Wind (1944, Arthur Ripley) 25

A test case, I suppose, of whether or not a film can sustain on endless scenes of piano playing or listening. Unsurprisingly, it can't. If Voice in the Wind's structure was well-ordered and the melodrama played more sincerely, there might be something to laud here. As it stands, it's rather exhaustingly awful.

The Original Score nomination makes sense. At the film's center is a pianist who plays rousing, if forgettable melodies. The music lacks a memorable theme. It also isn't helpful that this underscores an outright dull film. The Sound nomination is actively bad; the film consists almost entirely of pounding music and poorly recorded dialogue.
