304. (08 Dec) Magic Mike (2012, Steven Soderbergh) 54
The gimmicky striptease numbers are undoubtedly the best thing in Magic Mike, full of a vitality and raw sexuality that's otherwise lacking from the film itself. Though Channing Tatum's arc is about how age can damper things, Alex Pettyfer should inject more excitement to show why growing up isn't the easiest option. Without that, the film comes off self-serious and formulaic, ending things where only a shameless rom-com should. Matthew McConaughey has garnered some awards attention for this and, while he's energetic, the only performance of note here is a surprisingly capable Tatum.
