Phyllis Nagy seems determined to make movie magic, but she has no actual artistic flair or understanding of romance or drama. This does, at least, have a polished look, when Nagy's not getting too ambitious with visuals. But it's glossing over a truly sloppy and frothy character drama. Annette Bening hams it up incessantly while Ben Kingsley is a nonentity when he's supposed to be a charismatic force. Chloris Leachman is a scene stealer only because no one else is good. Famous faces like Ellen Burstyn and Chloe Sevigny make cameos without making the faintest impression.
