This clunky adaptation of The Man with the Iron Mask emphasizes all of the mean-spiritedness of Dumas's plot. The lavish production and adventure are a rather joyless slog as a result. There's so much deck-stacking to make us root for Philippe of Gascony and despise King Louis XIV the characters seem far from human. The Oscar-nominated score is fine, but lacks anything resembling a memorable theme.
