A canonical baseball film, 61* presents the stakes and backstory behind Roger Maris' attempt to break Babe Ruth's homerun record. Barry Pepper delivers a subtle and strong turn as Maris while Thomas Jane is handsome window dressing as Micky Mantle. This biopic is at once reverential and realistic, not glossing over Mantle's reputation as a boozer and a womanizer. Terse editing and warm cinematography only add to the film's accomplished feel. I can only imagine how captivating this would've been if I cared about baseball.
