156. (17 Aug) Poltergeist III (1988, Gary Sherman) 25
Lacking the menacing or enigmatic qualities of Poltergeist, this sequel removes the last traces of what made the original film so scary. The ensemble is simply too blasé about the supernatural elements they're faced with. Because they aren't afraid, it's hard for us to feel fear. It doesn't help that the so-called scares involve silly things like puddles, ice and mirrors. Without much inherently disturbing imagery and laughably insincere performances, this feels like a throwaway from the very start.
