130. (05 Jul) The Mudlark (1951, Jean Negulesco) 34
Extravagant makeup effects transform Irene Dunne and Alec Guinness into Queen Victoria and Benjamin Disraeli. Neither really outshines the physical change, giving performances so low-key as to be considered dull. The same principle applies to the film's Oscar-nominated costumes. Victorian era clothing could scarcely look more unremarkable in black-and-white. Dunne and Guinness are both often dressed in all black, their outfits photographing without a hint of detail. Everything else looks like something from summer stock. The plots about a waif and young lovers fall totally flat.
