This outrageously campy gay thriller is at once low-key in its limited scale, taking place in something like a 12-hour period, while being genuinely surprising, bold, and sordid. An early sex scene, for instance, features an unexpected and explicit erection. Such sexual frankness sets this apart, particularly in how it contrasts perceptions of sexuality in rural and urban settings. Turning things on their heads to make the rednecks the true sexual deviants is fairly delightful. Above all, this feels fresh; many films in this genre are outright inept, but Lantz has a polished aesthetic and a clear sense in how to make this ridiculous fun.
