Hell and Back Again plays like a real-life version of The Hurt Locker to the point where it seems Danfung Dennis was directly inspired by Kathryn Bigelow's movie. It makes this rather surreal as we watch a soldier struggling to adjust to life after war. There are no real moments of poignancy here. I've seen similar war documentaries that were far more moving or insightful. Only some disturbing battle footage where soldiers are killed has impact.
