This is truly masterful filmmaking. Jeff Nichols sustains so much tension and blurs the lines between truth and reality with such ease, it's easy to get lost within Take Shelter. There's also an astonishing amount of humor and heart here, despite its unrelentingly bleak content. Even in the final moments, as it seems the world is about to come to its end, Nichols shows that family unity means far more than anything else.
Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain, giving two of the best performances of the year, flesh out fully-realized characters. While it's sure not to be noticed by the Academy, there will be few films that are shot, edited, or scored better than this.
