Amidst the junk, and the hogwash. The bleak pretentious, and the self glorifying. It's never easy being a huge fan of cinema. Constantly at war with the modern obsessed, willfully ignorant, majority of film-goers seeking only to reinforce their own preconceived notions. Not to mention the legions of dreadful films piled one atop the other, calling out to us to be viewed. There's no real break from the desire to break out, be heard, and preach a sermon of greater films.
It's easy to forget why one ever started loving films to begin with. What was the drawing force that brought them so fully into our minds? For me, I've always loved the moments. Those bits and pieces of films you remember of a movie, when plot, character, and story have subsided from thought. Bob Uecker's "Just a bit outside." Indiana Jones taking down the sword fighter with his gun. "I'll be right here" from ET. The final march of the Ents in LOTR. Chopsticks in Big. The windy kiss in The Quiet Man. Among many many more.
These moments are the ones that always bring smiles to our faces, and remind us of what it means to love movies. Sure, they may not always be the most important scenes. They may not even be from the best of movies. Yet in them lies all the fabric of cinema we adore. The best of it and the worst of it. And for that alone it is of the greatest importance that you always hold on tightly to those moments you love. Regardless of where they come from.
