Here are the matches for round three. Marilyn Monroe had a tough match with Thelma Ritter but eventually won and will now face Janet Leigh in the funny ladies/girl next door bracket. While top seed Doris Day will take on Debbie Reynolds. Matches begin Thursday and will run through Saturday night.

Round Three Matches: Sophisticates and Drama Queens

Here we go with round three and some excellent matches. This round starts later on tonight and will run through Wednesday night. In the sophisticates bracket, there is a rematch from last year's bracket final between Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. The only difference being Grace is top seed and Audrey is the second seed. Last year Audrey was top seed and Grace was actually seeded 4th. Grace ended up beating Audrey then, so I imagine Audrey wants some payback. In the drama queens bracket, top seed Elizabeth Taylor squares off against 3rd seed Ava Gardner.

Tournament Update

Round 2 of the favorite classic movie actress tourney started last night and there are a few surprises taking place. Here's the breakdown of all the action in all four eras.

SILENT/30'S ERA

This match is pretty much over unless the 'It' Girl can stage one helluva comeback. 6th seed Gloria Swanson is shocking 2nd seed Mary Pickford with a 30 point thrashing of her own. Barbara Stanwyck is coasting in her match with Claudette Colbert. And finally Joan Crawford is starting to pull away from Marlene Dietrich after falling behind early. Can't wait to see what day 2 has in store for this era.

The only non-surprise here is that Bette Davis is just rolling over Joan Fontaine. I kind of figured that Joan would be no match for Bette. But I am surprised and glad that Joan's sister, Olivia is hanging with the great Kate Hepburn, down by only four points. Another surprise has to be Gene Tierney doing her best and matching top seed and final four finalist last year Vivien Leigh vote for vote. Gene currently has a one point edge. And Lauren Bacall is up by 5 votes over perennial favorite Ingrid Bergman, who made it to the 40's era final match against Leigh. Man, this era could produce some of the biggest upsets of the tourney if the scoring holds. Stay tuned.

Top seed Grace Kelly is just crushing Sophia Loren, as expected. As is the other top seed Elizabeth Taylor, who is showing no mercy on Anne Baxter. I'm a little surprised though that Ava Gardner has such a big lead over Susan Hayward. Hayward went pretty deep into the tourney last year, even knocking out Elizabeth Taylor in one round. So this is kind of a shock. The marquee match between Deborah Kerr and Audrey Hepburn has been good as advertised. The two have been trading leads back and forth all day long, with Kerr currently enjoying a slight 2 point edge.

THE 60'S ERA

Lee Remick is down to Catherine Deneuve by 8 points. And we have our only tie in the entire tourney between number 1 seed Julie Christie and upstart Susannah York. Tied at 18-all.

Here are the matches that start tomorrow and will run through Wednesday night 7 pm EST.  And this round features some great matches. Audrey Hepburn squares off against Deborah Kerr in the premiere match of this round. While Susan Hayward takes on Ava Gardner in what's sure to be a slugfest. I can't wait. And I just realized that all 4 top seeds from both categories made it. Cool!

Carole is happy she won...but also knows Irene won as well

Wasn't it just the other day when Barbara Stanywck set a record for most votes in a single match. Well defending champion Irene Dunne does her one better as she crushed Luise Rainier 83-8. For those wondering would Irene kind of sit back and not really compete since she won this last year, think again. My girl Carole rung up 80 votes in defeating her My Man Godfrey co-star by a wide margin. The only upset occurred when 7th seed Hattie McDaniel beat  2nd seed Shirley Temple 51-41. And a close match between Jeanette MacDonald and Mae West saw Jeanette edge Mae by 7 votes.

No surprises here as all the top seeds won. The closest match was the one between Jane Wyman and Donna Reed, which changed leads many times over the three days. I was surprised that Rita Hayworth blew the doors off of Hedy Lamarr. I thought that would have been a much closer match. Lucille Ball and Maureen O'Hara, who both were not part of last year's tourney had a battle of the redheads, which saw Lucy come out on top.

Marilyn had some first round jitters remembering what happened last year, but she need

not worry as she rolled to her first ever tourney victory

Marilyn Monroe, who got bounced last year in the first round by Gloria Grahame, was not about to let that happened again. MM rolled over Joanne Woodward by 40 points, to be the most dominant victory in this era. Top seed Doris Day had little trouble with Jane Russell. I think Doris will like competing in the 50's era. Last year she was in the 60's. Newcomers to the tourney, Vera-Ellen,, Judy Holliday and Thelma Ritter all scored victories to move on to the second round.

Oh yeah...a little celebratory dance is needed!

No real drama here as all the top seeds won with the closest match being between the two sex icons of the 60's, Ann-Margret and Raquel Welch. Ann edged out Raquel by 6 votes. Pretty close. Natalie Wood, a final four finalist last year had the biggest margin of victory in this era by crushing Stella Stevens by 43 votes. Ouch!

Especially Irene who is up 74-7 over two-time Oscar winner Luise Rainer. The close match is between Shirley Temple and Hattie McDaniel. McDaniel currently has a slight 5 point edge

This era has some much closer matches. Jane Wyman and Donna Reed are battling it out big time with Wyman currently holding a 7 point edge. Eve Arden is up by 8 points over Teresa Wright. Betty Grable is leading June Allyson by 9. Ann Miller is up by 8 over Virginia Mayo. Top seed Rosalind Russell though is destroying Jeanne Crain 54-7. Someone should call for the mercy rule. And in the battle of the redheads, Lucille Ball fell behind early to Maureen O'Hara by as many as 8 points as now surged to lead by nearly 20. I guess the phrase 'I Love Lucy' is definitively most true.

These matches will run through tonight and if there is a tie along the way, a tie-breaker match will take place tomorrow for one day only to see who will move on to round 2.

There is only one really close match..between Shirley Temple and Hattie McDaniel. The other matches are all blow-outs. Happy to report that my girl Carole Lombard is having no trouble at all, trouncing her My Man Godfrey co-star Gail Patrick 55-10. And that defending champion Irene Dunne is rolling as well, beating the brakes off of Luise Rainer 54-7. Jeanette MacDonald and Mae West have a somewhat close match with Jeanette leading by only 6 votes.

Another era filled with blow-outs. The lone exception is between Vera-Ellen and Leslie Caron, with Vera holding a 3 point edge. Marilyn Monroe, who famously got knocked out of the first round last year by Gloria Grahame is not gonna have that happen again as she is crushing Joanne Woodward. And Doris Day who competing in the 60's era last year has had little trouble adjusting to life in the 50's as she is handling Jane Russell. Same thing for 60's cross-over Janet Leigh, as she is up big on Jayne Mansfield. And first timer Thelma Ritter is enjoying an easy going match over Eva Marie Saint.
