Top Ranked Drama-Comedy Films and Other Dramas
Monday, September 7, 2009
These are the last of the drama genres from our survey of all the internet polls. Using IMDB's designations, there are 23 films mentioned listed as either drama-comedy or comedy-drama, with 16 in the top 1000.
Following this list are the remaining dramas from various other sub-genres: fantasy, mystery, legal, adventure - really just the miscellaneous remaining dramas that haven't been listed
Top Ranked Family Dramas on the Net
The top ranked family dramas from our survey of all the polls on the net. By these, we mean dramas centered around family situations, not G-rated films for the family to enjoy. I'm sure more can be defined as both society and family, or both family and romance, so it's a loose definition. 49 were mentioned, 41 in the top 1000.

These are all the films mentioned in our survey of internet polls that I would consider romance-dramas, 231 in all, 160 in the top 1000. Some obviously have humor and were listed as drama-comedy, but I considered the overall impact of the film. There are nine best picture winners here.

Thursday, September 3, 2009
There are around 725 dramas mentioned in our film survey. We may eventually post the entire list as one, but we decided to break them down in to sub-genres for these posts. We have family drama, romance drama, society dramas as the main groups, while some smaller sets are drama-comedy, mystery drama, fantasy drama. We will also post foreign language dramas separate as well. Once again, we've used

Films about politicians, like JFK and All the King’s Men, or people who were caught up in the politics of their time, like The Conformist, To Be or Not To Be, and All the President’s Men. In some, the politics is just the background for the main story, such as Doctor Zhivago, Once Upon a Time in America or American History X, or may dominate the lives of all the characters like Brazil, The Lives

Top Ranked Film Noir
Saturday, August 29, 2009
Film noir, for initiates, is a French term meaning literally "night film". The style is generally credited to American filmmakers creating this style for soldiers returning from WW2 around 1943-45 who expected more realistic, less optimistic subjects than traditional upbeat 'Hollywood ending' films. Some academics say it began with Billy Wilders Double Indemnity in 1944, some point to even

Top Ranked Comedy Films

These are all the comedy films mentioned in our survey of top ranked films on the net. We also included films of other genres if comedy is a strong element as well, but not just occasional humor, such as Star Wars or James Bond films. There were 230 mentioned in all (18%), with 175 making the top 1000 - and some of these aren't pure comedy, these came from all genres.

Top Ranked Comedy Films from Other Genres
These are the top-ranked comedies from miscellaneous genres that we haven't covered yet, so not romantic, society, war, or crime comedies. These came from childrens, SciFi, fantasy, horror, westerns, music (not musicals, but think Spinal Tap), shorts, and 'dramedy' or combination drama/comedy films, both a bad word invention and usually a bad film idea. We'll later post a ranking of ALL COMEDIES
Top Ranked Crime Comedy Films
Crime comedies, another comedy genre from our top ranked films on the net survey. Once again, many of these overlap genres, most also being romantic comedies, like The Lady Eve. The next, and last comedy group, will feature all the other miscellaneous genres: western, family, horror, fantasy, children's, music. Notice that three of the top five are con-artist stories.

We're designating "society comedies" those whose humor comes from society, social classes, culture, history, life in general - anything but romance (see previous post), crime (to follow), and some other miscellaneous genres, such as children's comedies, fantasy and horror comedies; those we'll group in one list to catch all the missing genres. We're listing war comedies below these, as war is a

Top Ranked Fantasy Films

Top Ranked fantasy films from our internet film survey. As you can tell, many of these cross at least two genres, as Wizard of Oz was also the #1 ranked musical, but who could argue that it's major appeal is its creation of a unique and popular fantasy world, one where everyone serves "the great and powerful wizard of oz", who is really an American huckster using illusion and intimidation to
Top Ranked Horror Films on the Net
Top ranked horror films from our internet survey, listed from over 1280 film, 43 horror films were mentioned, with 35 making the top 1000. This is probably my least favorite genre, as its like cooking hamburgers, there's only so many ways to kill people, and the best of these go beyond that. Unfortunately directors and filmgoers do NOT, preferring the simple slasher films over anything creative.
