Curse

Thursday, November 1, 2012

Curse is a Singaporean horror film that although has a low-budget feel to it, manages to entertain with good enough characters and an interesting storyline.

Using the concept of Singapore's reserve army, six individuals from various aspects of life are grouped together and sent to an island, supposed to be cursed, to find three AWOL soldiers. Although the premise of the story gives ample opportunity for each character, ranging from a historian and a reflexologist to a socialite and a career soldier, to showcase individual personality traits, the film never really capitalizes on this keeping the story more about the cursed island and the evil spirits of a mother and daughter that are the cause of all the mayhem and murder.

There is though a sense of mystery to the entire story with the events being told in flashback by one survivor who isn't disclosed till the very end. Moreover, within the flashback story there are other mysterious and surprising elements thrown in for good measure. With the setting being a deserted island and the film being primarily filmed in wooded areas, there is a continuous feel of dread throughout and the makers use the settings well enough to incorporate a few jumps and scares for the audience.

The most disappointing aspect of the film has to be the choppy acting and dialogue delivery. The spoken language is mainly English and at times it is clear that the actors are struggling with the pronunciations. Nevertheless, it isn't horrific acting, just not of the level that could and would have taken the film to the next level.

Curse makes for a fun watch with a descent story concept, but with a higher budget and a stronger cast, it could have achieved much more than it already has.

Rating 3/5

#MTOS Hosts Wanted - May to August 2012

Well, hello there. Welcome to another round of #MTOS Hosting for the months of MAY, JUNE, JULY, and AUGUST.

First, I would really like for everyone interested in hosting #MTOS to go through this entire post before commenting below. #MTOS would also like to thank all the past hosts and participants without whom we would not exist. We have had so much love from everyone, even if they do not take part, we cannot thank you enough. From mentions in podcasts to ReTweets to just generally being exited and talking about #MTOS, you all make #MTOS what it is today. So, THANK YOU, and YOU, and YOU!!

Now, getting down to business, we have had tremendous interest for the hosting duties of #MTOS. We simply love and cannot believe the excitement that we see in all the people. To make things a little simpler this is how you can sign-up for being a host from the start of May till the end of August;

The good news is that we are going to start repeating topics and hosts, so if you want to host a topic we might have had before or you have hosted before, GO FOR IT! (Although if you do have a new theme, we would appreciate that)

Below, I have mentioned all the dates that are available for hosting in the months of May-August. Please remember that all dates lie on a Sunday and #MTOS begins at 20:00 GMT. As a host you will also be responsible for writing a blog with the 10 questions relating to your theme on the Tuesday before your hosting date.

All you have to do in order to host is comment below with your preferential date, your theme, and your twitter handle. There are a total of 17 spots that are available. A few have already been taken, and those are the ones we are planning (rather trying to plan) something special for you all.

IMPORTANT: Please read the following points carefully before commenting below;

Please, before commenting, read all the comments to make sure you are not duplicating a date that has already been taken. If you do duplicate, we cannot guarantee you a spot at a later date.

Kindly select only one date. If you are unsure, select a later or earlier date. If you mention two dates in your post, once again we will be unable to guarantee you a spot on either of the dates.

Also, please try and make sure that your theme has not been taken before. If you do select a theme and want to change it later, you may do so. If you are unsure, simply state the Theme as "To Be Decided" for now.

Lastly, please make sure that your comment is showing in the comment box, by refreshing the page.

All this might seem a tad complicated, but we felt it would be the fairest way to go about selecting the hosts.

The way #MTOS is going, I am sure we will continue to have the event for a long time, so please if you do not get a spot this time, you will surely have a better chance in the next round of bookings that we plan to open in August.

#MTOS April 1, 2012 - TEEN MOVIES

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

This week's #MTOS will be hosted by @Dale_SaxonIII aka Dude In a Panda Suit :-) Please follow him on twitter for the event. Below is his post that I am hosting on my blog.

*RIIIIINNNNG* and there’s the bell. Don’t worry you’re not late, but just in time for class. Welcome back to your awkward adolescent years. Whether you were running with the popular kids, scoring the winning touchdown, or serving time after school for the great prank you almost pulled off, you hated it. Thank god who knew how to survive thanks to films that showed you how to party, how to defeat the bully, how to be cool, and how to land your crush. Teen movies ranging all the way from the 50’s up until present day. From Beach parties to full community chaotic block parties…Teens movies have been a staple in film. So let’s get this going….

*Teen Movies for the sake of this week’s MTOS, will be limited to the following restriction; If any of the characters adventures or setting takes place after college, it’s not a TEEN Movie*

Growing up sucks! You’re older now, you have bills and responsibility. Oh how you long for the golden days of good times and good friends…
1. What is the ultimate feel good Teen movie for you?

There’s a real cool spot at the other side of town, where the cool kids go to hang out and you’re not invited. CRASH IT!! Want to be part of the cool crowd? Infiltrate! * This question allows usage of cross dressing, creating new personas, and blackface*
2. Which Teen movie hangout spots and/or cool cliques did you want to get into?

“You need to fit in dude! Your Cali hair and surfing skills don’t work here in football country” Athletics. Sometimes you need to score a goal or cross that finish line for the team to save face and make your name amongst your class mates
3. What Teen movie sports activity would you have participated in?

TEENAGERS ARE ALL ASSHOLES. No matter what you say, at one point you were a jerk to authority, and obnoxious to elders. Worst of all they manage to turn high school into survival of the fittest. From social life ruining gossip to plots of committing murder, teens were ruthless *Note: Any plans involving a dean or principal are void*
4. Which teen movie had the cruelest plans of evil and why?

3 more minutes until summer vacation…Summer jobs, flings, parties, the beach, or worse…being sent away to another town and have to make new friend! No matter what it needed to be awesome so when the time came to answer “How did you spend your summer vacation?” you had the perfect response. The summer is the major setting of a lot of teen movies.
5.       Which movie had the better summer vacation and which had the worst?

Don’t touch the car! No parties! Listen to your brother! No using Magic! Double Secret Academic Probation!! Restrictions are the worst thing you can give a teenager. Rules? Ha! They’ll break them in style.
6.      Which teen movie best displayed the mistake of trusting teens to follow the rules?

All Teenagers must Die. Jumping off the previous question, they don’t listen and this usually lands them in some non-comedic situations with horrific consequences. Drug usage, premarital sex, drinking, parties, walking off alone, watching rated R movies late at night where teenagers die…you know the rules!
7. Which teen horror movie did you feel punished stupid teenagers the best?

Who knows teens better than teens themselves? The adults writing the script and calling the shots on set, that’s who. Sometimes it takes a grown child to express the penned up emotions from those years of sitting in the back of the classroom. These events usually give us a great film in total outside of the actors and actresses.
8. Which directors and/or writers do you feel gave us some great teen movies?

PARTY!! PARTY!! There’s Party after graduation/prom/the big game or just a huge damn party. When it’s wrong, it feels so right. Who’s driving?
9. Which Teen Movie Bash would you have attended?

And lastly…
10. Create your perfect Teen Movie: Title, plot, and cast. ( I know what you’re thinking “Really, with 140 characters?” Ha Ha Ha)

Bonus questions:

11.         Which Teen movie was a better adaption of a Shakespeare story?
12.         Name your Teen Movie Crush.
13.         What Teen Musical would’ve driven you crazy to attend every school day?

The Story of #MTOS ... So far

Monday, February 27, 2012

It's been almost 6 months since our little project started. I'll be the first to admit that it wasn't an original idea. But, it was an idea that had not been explored.

Having just started being active on twitter, soon enough I came to know about these weekly chats that would take place. Mostly, due to my interest, I started participating in travel chats like #TTOT (Travel Talk On Tuesday) or #TNI (Traveler's Night In). Surprisingly, there was no such chat on Twitter that catered to the cinephiles.

Once I had Rachel onboard (after asking a few people to help, she was the only one who came forward), I feel we made a somewhat selfish yet encouraging idea of involving the very cinephiles who were our target to also help us with the event. It took a little bit of consideration and eventually we had a structure, a time (20:00 GMT) and a day (Sunday) when we would hold #MTOS each week.

The different aspect of #MTOS, one that differentiates it from other such talks across the other lifestyle (Travel, Photography, Food) talks, is that we decided to have a different host each week along with a different topic. To encourage the participants to take part, we decided to ask the hosts to make the questions and post them on their blogs so that in return they also got some traffic and free advertisement for their blogs. Not only did this make it easier for us and less stressful, but it proved to be a great way to give back to the film blogging community.

I still remember the very first #MTOS. While I fiddled with the questions, Rachel was busy calling people in and getting them to participate. Add to that the extensive work we had to do to explain the whole method to each new participant. But, eventually it paid of and we might not be hugely successful today, but I like to think we make a difference once a week and bring about some fun in people's lives.

#MTOS has not been without its problems. The time has always been an issue. It's obvious we cannot cater to the whole world and thus we decided on a time when it would be day in USA, evening in Europe, what I call "owl hour" in Asia, and morning in Australia. Asia definitely got the wrong end of the stick, but in all honestly, most cinephiles on Twitter, in my opinion, are in the western world, so it seemed okay to give them the benefit.

#MTOS has also had some very passionate supporters, and I thank them for that. But this passion in some cases also led to negative feedbacks. I believe in life one should take criticism and praise on equal levels. I've personally never spoken about the questions that were raised about #MTOS till now, but I would like to address something today.

#MTOS has never been about looking at film in deep details. I find it absurd to even imagine that we can discuss the nuances of cinema in 140 characters of less. So #MTOS is shallow. I actually take pride in that. When I started blogging, it was because I wanted to write reviews that were in common everyday language. I did not want to use big words. I did not know big words. I did not want to talk about different aspects of a film in detail. I never had and never will have a journalistic approach to writing reviews, but then that is the whole point. Film for me should always be experienced by each individual and each one should take a different, personal story from the film they watch. If I don't understand a film, and I am curious, I look up or ask someone. The same holds true for #MTOS.

#MTOS has always been about fun. That is the baseline. It's about discovering new films. Not talking about them in detail, although you can if you want to. We do have topics that cover all aspects of films, so as to make the event more interesting. It is about finding like minded people. It's about having a laugh and even a rant without getting heated up. It's about learning what others, around the world, think about a film and respecting their opinions. In short, just like any film, #MTOS is what you, the participants, make of it individually.

#MTOS has also had its success stories. Recently I found out about a couple who actually found out about each other during #MTOS and are dating now. How wonderful is that! We have new people joining in each week curious about that hashtag that pops up on their timelines every Sunday. We have had blogs that came into limelight and have increased their traffic ever since they hosted a #MTOS.

And that's the story of #MTOS so far. Rachel, my partner-in-crime, has been a tremendous driving force ever since we started, and has been the one to keep me and things in place every time frustration sets in with last minute host dropout and what not!

We are halfway through our second "semester" which ends in April and hope to start opening the "bookings" for hosts sometime in March. My request to everyone participating would be that we do #MTOS for no financial gain. We spend our time and energy on it, along with that of the hosts, so please if you love films, if you love to talk about them, if you like people who like films, then try and make it to the next #MTOS and the one after that, and the one after that, and the one after that...

#MTOS in Posters

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Those of you who follow #MTOS on Twitter, here are just a few posters that I have worked on from time to time over the last 6 months or so. Most of them have been made through applications on my iPad, but if you like #MTOS feel free to use them on your blogs or anywhere else. Also, do tell which one you like the best?

#MTOS Twitter Handle

Monday, January 9, 2012

As some of you are aware, we now have a Twitter handle (@MovieTOS). The reason for creating the handle was to give an option to the participants of the event to go about taking part without overcrowding their followers timelines.

Please do read the following points and decide accordingly;

If you feel you tweet a lot during #MTOS and your followers are not liking it, then the best way to avoid overcrowding their timeline would be to give out your answers to @MovieTOS. You may also give them out to the host of the week, but since the host is usually busy, I feel that by overcrowding their timeline would just add more pressure on them.

Example : @MovieTOS A1. I like Star Wars #MTOS

This way the message will be for only @MovieTOS and your followers who are not part of the talk and not following @MovieTOS will not have your message show on their timeline.

I am aware that by adding the handle we are limiting our letter count, but for now it seems like a small price to pay.

It is very important to still put #MTOS at the end, so that everyone who is taking part in the talk sees your answer if they are using the search function, no matter if they follow you or not, as we still want #MTOS to be a way for film people to find each other.

Following @MovieTOS is not compulsory in order to take part in #MTOS. It's just an option.

We would however advise that the HOST please follow @MovieTOS just for the week they are hosting.

Also, if you have not had complaints from your followers, then you may continue as before, as technically that would be the best way.

Or you can always do a few tweets to @MovieTOS and a few as you have been doing before.

@MovieTOS will not be following anyone back. It's just there as a medium to let you tweet without overcrowding the timeline. Both me (@raghavmodi) and Rachel (@askimrach) will still be using our regular Twitter handles for everything else.

This is just an experiment we are trying and if it becomes too confusing or does not work, then at a later date we will scrap it.

On a separate note, I am sure most of you are aware of some of the confrontations that are taking place from time to time during #MTOS. My humble request to each and every participant would be to simply ignore the comments and not give them any attention whatsoever.

Thank you for understanding and we are always eager to hear your views and recommendations.

#MTOS Hosts Wanted

Saturday, November 12, 2011

Well, hello there. First, I would really like for everyone interested in hosting #MTOS to go through this entire post before commenting below. Also I would like to thank a few people who have been instrumental in making #MTOS what it is today.

Rachel (@askimrach) - Who has been the best co-founder ever and deserves all the credit for making #MTOS popular. She is also the one who has kept me sane when things got a little irritating, to put it lightly :-)

Hash Tracking (@HashTracking) - The team of Hash Tracking and especially Charlie have helped compile the statistics of every #MTOS for free from the start. It has helped us actually see our small talk grow and also provides transcripts for people who for one reason or another miss out. So, thank you for being so generous.

Hosts - There have been quite a few and I have mentioned them all below, but you have been great in helping us organize the event and honestly making it so much easier for us. Simply put, you are the lifeline of #MTOS

Participants - #MTOS would not exist without all the participants. We have had so much love from everyone, even if they do not take part, we cannot thank you enough. From mentions in podcasts and blog posts to a team doing round-ups to ReTweets to just generally being exited and talking about #MTOS, you all make #MTOS what it is today. So, THANK YOU, and YOU, and YOU!!

Now, getting down to business, we have had tremendous interest for the hosting duties of #MTOS. We simply love and cannot believe the excitement that we see in all the people. To make things a little simpler this is how you can sign-up for being a host from the start of January till the end of April;

Below I have mentioned all the previous #MTOS we have had with the themes and the hosts. Please go through the list to make sure your choice of theme has not already been done. Eventually we will be repeating themes, but for now we would like to go with new themes only.

After that, just for reference, I have mentioned all the dates that are available for hosting in the months of January - April.

There are a total of 18 spots that are available.

IMPORTANT: Please read the following points carefully before commenting below;

The months of January and February are reserved only for "new" hosts. So if you have already hosted #MTOS and would like to host again, please only select a date in March or April.

Also, please try and make sure that your theme has not been taken or done before. If you do select a duplicate theme, you can change it at a later stage, but at that point, you might have limited choice. If you are unsure, simply state the Theme as "To Be Decided" for now.

If you have already hosted #MTOS and you select a date in January or February, then again we will not be able to guarantee you a spot at a later stage, so please be careful about the date you choose.

Lastly, please make sure that your comment is showing in the comment box, by refreshing the page.

All this might seem a tad complicated, but we felt it would be the fairest way to go about selecting the hosts.

The way #MTOS is going, I am sure we will continue to have the event for a long time, so please if you do not get a spot this time, you will surely have a better chance in the next round of bookings that we plan to open in March.

What is #MTOS ?

Monday, September 5, 2011

Movie Talk On Sunday is an initiative to get the Twitter Film Community together at one time and one day each week to discuss various film related topics. The aim of the whole exercise, besides having fun is to find new individuals who share the same passion for films as you do and also in the process find out about different aspects about movies. You can count on finding about new movies, interesting facts, and who knows even gossip.

How Does It Work?

It really is simple. There are 10 questions. We will throw out 1 question relating to the weeks topic every 10 minutes starting at 20:00 GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) every Sunday evening. All the questions and subsequent answers/discussions, by you, should simply be followed by #MTOS. In your Twitter "search" you can type in #MTOS and follow what everyone is saying and henceforth answer back and take part. If you "like" someone's answer simply Re-Tweet it like you would normally on Twitter.

In order to make #MTOS more interactive we have started asking everyone to post their blog links related to the topic of the week throughout the week with the hashtag  (#MTOS) so that everyone can simple search #MTOS at any time and read interesting write-ups before the actualy event that Sunday.

#MTOS is all about you. We will try and make the questions open ended with multiple answers. Let the discussions go off in a tangent if you find someone who agrees/disagrees with what you think. Just remember to #MTOS everything so someone neither one of you follow can also join in.

Important : Please, please, please avoid profanity and behave in a civilized manner.

As #MTOS is growing and the purpose of the whole exercise is to promote the Film Community, we have started having a "Host" for each event on Sunday. If you would like to host a #MTOS please drop @raghavmodi or @askimrach a line and we will sort it out. As a host you will work with us and come up with a topic and then subsequent questions relating to the topic to post on the Sunday of your hosting. You get to blog about it in advance and it's also a great way to get more twitter followers.

The host will be blogging each week (Tuesday) about the topic and the 10 questions in advance so that you can visit the post and be prepared come Sunday evening.

I am sure a lot of people will find that the time does not work for them. Unfortunately, till we have more people helping us out we cannot do anything about it. Hopefully in the future we can do it twice on Sundays to cover up most time zones.

In case you like #MTOS and want to support it, please feel free to add a banner to your blog about #MTOS or simply talk about it on twitter.

Any questions or suggestions please comment below. Please RT this post and also please make it to the talk.

Thank you and see you on Sunday!

What's the catch you ask? Nothing. You have to obviously participate in #MTOS on 28th August 2011 at 20:00 GMT and make sure you follow @raghavmodi and @askimrach.

The giveaways will be handed out just based on random answers. They don't have to be "right" or even something we agree/disagree with. It can be something we like, something we find funny, a valid point, basically any reason whatsoever.

We can't promise, but our plan and hope is that with time more people will join in on #MTOS and eventually more prominent companies/organization will have giveaways which will obviously be more fun.

To the "winners" of the giveaway, the items will be sent from India, so please expect 10-14 days of delivery time, minimum. I do hope that nothing gets lost, but in case it does, we will unfortunately not be able to replace it. Sorry.

On a separate note; I would also like to thank @hashtracking who has been kind enough to track our #MTOS hashtag this week for free. Please follow them as they provide detailed statistics and are an amazing source of information for any organization or individual. We will be posting the link to the results in our next blog on Tuesday.

Movie Talk On Sunday - 28th August 2011

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

First and foremost many thanks to @Filmoria for hosting the August 21st 2011 #MTOS. It was a night filled with Fantasy and Science Fiction and thank you all for participating.

If you are new, click here and here to find out about the origins of Movie Talk On Sunday.

Once again please support Movie Talk On Sunday by talking about it, hosting it, and participating in it. If you would like to put up a banner on your site (with or without a link) please do so to promote #MTOS (I have a few if you need them).

A few important pointers/reminders:

Please remember to type "#MTOS" after all your replies and answers. Only then will your reply be seen by everyone and it adds for better participation. Also remember the # as just typing "MTOS" will once again not show your tweet in search.

RT the questions. It enables the questions to reach a wider audience.

Please remember to answer the Questions by writing their number. So an answer to Question 1 can start with "A1...". This also helps especially if you are answering a question asked earlier.

Thanks to Rachel's ( @askimrach ) amazing PR skills we now have hosts for #MTOS all through September. It is really great to see the Twitter Film Community getting excited and taking part in this weekly event. Just to whet your appetite a little here are the future hosts and the topics they will be moderating; although it is not compulsory, but we highly recommend that you follow them;

4th September          Horror Films              @cine_cite
11th September       To Be Decided          @realtormatthew
18th September       Foreign Films            @RozD

MOVIE TALK ON SUNDAY - 14th August 2011

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

Brushing away my doubts I'm happy to say that the first ever #MTOS (Movie Talk On Sunday) went well. It is just the beginning, but I can't thank enough all the film enthusiasts who joined in. As promised I could see new friendships being formed (okay too mushy, so maybe we stick to new followers being added) and new films being discovered. That and the brilliant conversations that went on is the sole purpose of #MTOS.

In case you are new and want to find out what #MTOS is, please click here.

A few observation/suggestions/requests before we talk about next weeks topic and questions;

Remember to always #MTOS all your replies. Even if you are going off on a tangent, still use #MTOS. This way everyone can read your replies even if they don't follow you.

Although I loved the extra attention with the mentions (@raghavmodi) when answering questions there isn't a real need to mention me (or the host of the week). This will also give you those essential extra letters. Simply use #MTOS. Obviously if you are in conversation with me or someone you will mention the person.

When answering the questions just so people can relate your answer to the right question you can start by mentioning the number of the question, so like A1, A2, A3... and then proceed with the answer.

If possible try and RT the questions as well. This will help the questions reach a much wider audience as I could see people discovering #MTOS as we all tweeted.

The first rule of #MTOS is that there is no rule, well except that we all act as respectable adults. So, if you join in late, no problem. Want to answer a question you missed or thought of a better answer, no problem. Want to leave early, no problem.

We Need You:
We need you to help us organise. It's not tedious work, but mostly we need people to help us with ideas for topics and then come up with questions that can be posted in a blog like this in advance for all to see.

We need you as administrators during #MTOS. All that means is that you will be hosting and tweeting the questions every 10 minutes that Sunday. It's a great way to get followers and meet new people.

We need bloggers. These initial blogs are long, but in a few weeks we will just need people to do a tiny write-up about the week’s topic and post the questions and then promote the blog post throughout the week to get the buzz going. The host can post the blogpost on your own blog/website getting traffic to your site.

There were some concerns regarding who can participate. Since #MTOS is for everyone it is NOT necessary that you like, follow, be friends with either of the founders or the host of the week. You can take part no matter what.

#MTOS is all about the film community so we would love and very much like your help make it better. You can simply DM @raghavmodi or @askimrach if you would like to help us out.

Now, drum rolls please.... This week the topic is SUPERHERO MOVIES. We thought it is a topic that most people will be familiar with and should be interesting since superheroes are the talk of the town right about now.

The 10 questions we will be throwing out on Twitter on Sunday, August 14th at 20:00 GMT are mentioned below. We post them here in advance so everyone has some time to think about them before Sunday.

Q1. Your favourite superhero film? #MTOS
Q2. Which superhero film would you like a reboot of? #MTOS
Q3. Who would win between Batman and Spiderman in a fight, and why? #MTOS
Q4. A superhero that you would love to see leap out of the comic book pages onto the big screen? #MTOS
Q5. If you could be any superhero for one day, who would you be and why? #MTOS
Q6. The worst ever superhero movie? #MTOS
Q7. The most eagerly awaited superhero film? #MTOS
Q8. If Christopher Nolan were to take on another superhero franchise, which one would you like it to be? #MTOS
Q9. The meanest villain a superhero has had, on screen? #MTOS
Q10. Are Average Joe's turned vigilante superheroes (Kick Ass/Super) a cool concept or we have had enough? #MTOS
Bonus Q11. Pitch us your own superhero? #MTOS

Thank you and PLEASE TAKE PART EVERY SUNDAY at 20:00 GMT on Twitter in #MTOS
