018. (20 Jan) Death Weekend (1976, William Fruet) 65

As the men of Death Weekend all prove to be brutes or perverts, Brenda Vaccaro is irresistible as the no-nonsense woman who's exhausted with their antics from the start. Even while she's objectified, brutalized and nearly murdered, she's nothing more than annoyed that these immature hooligans won't just leave her alone. Her irritation certainly removes some degree of the sense of danger, but it makes her a towering, powerful presence in this male-dominated thriller. It's easy to enjoy her feminist revenge fantasy. However, the roughnecks' irritation with Don Stroud's wealth also makes this an intriguing class commentary. Sure, Straw Dogs did it better, but this is still incredibly strong.
