309. (09 Dec) The House I Live In (2012, Eugene Jarecki) 63
The House I Live In offers a thorough explanation of the failings of the war on drugs, from its origins to fundamental inequality in sentencing to potential reform. There's a lot to take in here, yet Jarecki maintains proportion by keeping this on a personal level. We see how ordinary people have been devastated by drugs, ranging from dealers and users to their families to the law enforcement whose priorities have shifted over the last few decades. Though a little unfocused at times and maybe overreaching with a Holocaust comparison, this is important documentary filmmaking.
