308. (09 Dec) Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God (2012, Alex Gibney) 40
Mea Maxima Culpa casts a wide net, first focusing on an abusive priest in a home for deaf boys in Milwaukee before skipping to an Elvis impersonator priest in Dublin and then shifting back. Despite the disturbing nature of these sexual abuse cases, the aimlessness makes it confounding why specific instances get so much of Gibney's attention. Works like Twist of Faith and Deliver Us from Evil have already shown the intensely personal side of Catholic abuse scandal, so it's odd that only midway through the film does Gibney play to his strength in showing the global scale of the cover-ups and the Vatican's damning involvement.
