What initially starts out as a creepy, atmospheric horror film quickly wears out its welcome. Shlocky scares are the biggest issue, as Scott Derrickson has no understanding that what we don't see is often far scarier than what we do. The plot is half-baked, characters barely feel fleshed out, and the ending seems tacked on. But there are some moments of promise here where there's undeniable tension. Mostly, though, that tension gets dissolved away as Derrickson overloads us with cheap images, an overbearing score and bloated runtime. An especially strong Ethan Hawke lends as much credibility as is possible.
