Poking fun at the original Grave Encounters only to get our guard down, this is meta on an almost perfect level. Once it's done enough to build up some mythology and returns to the original film's setting, this goes full-on into horror. It matches the intensity of the first film beat for beat. Essentially, it retreads scares from the last movie, but still offers twists and genuine surprises. Most established horror franchises wish they were so consistent.
