This mean-spirited, effortful comedy really never lands one solid joke. The self-referential narration, which is way too pleased with itself, never seems genuinely clever. The characters are broad and uninteresting. Martin Donovan's defining character trait, for instance, is correcting people's grammar. Only Lisa Kudrow comes off at all well, as Christina Ricci is trying way too hard.
