186. (02 Sep) Oliver & Company (1988, George Scribner) 42
Only a pre-Disney Renaissance film could adapt plot-driven Dickens and make the story play like an inconsequential video game. Characters hardly have arcs and musical numbers come out of nowhere. At least there's some successful tugging of heartstrings. Oliver is a genuinely adorable main character, worth rooting for even if the film he's in moves too quickly to establish relationships or dramatic stakes. The highlight here is Billy Joel's energetic rendition of "Why Should I Worry?"
