Small details like shared cigarettes and longing, meaningful eye contact make this legitimately sexy filmmaking. Whenever the film strays away from sex to focus on teen angst or family drama, it decisively loses its edge. Coming of age films, even those focusing on a niche group like Greek immigrants in Australia, are a dime a dozen and Head On opts to sacrifice atmosphere for simplistic plot. The countless talky scenes don't hold a candle to a nearly wordless, volatile sexual encounter in the film's finale. He may not be much of a leading man, but Alex Dimitriades is breathtakingly photogenic. Many stylizations, particularly blurring and slow-motion, have made this age poorly.
