177. (28 Aug) Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989, William Shatner) 37

Worst Picture of 1989 seems a tad harsh, but this strained, cheap-looking Star Trek is a massive disappointment following The Voyage Home. The Final Frontier's most obvious failing is an outrageously slow set-up. An elaborate, but completely underwhelming hostage situation takes up much of the film's first hour. By the time it's revealed the film is in fact about searching for the meaning of existence, it's no surprise this ill-conceived sequel is obliviously rehashing Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Numerous stunts and silly gags serve to distract from poor plotting, but even at its best the film is never less than tedious.
