172. V/H/S (2012, David Bruckner, Glenn McQuaid, Radio Silence, Joe Swanberg, Ti West & Adam Wingard) 65
This is one of the most solid anthology films I've seen. Aside from a flimsy wraparound, there are no weak segments here. They more or less are chronologically ordered from weakest to strongest.
"Amateur Night" is over-edited to a definite fault. The premise here is predictable enough and the camerawork is so shaky it's hard to be too scared when space is so ill-defined. It ends on a tongue-in-cheek note that makes this a tad too silly for its own good.
"Second Honeymoon" has the most fun using first-person perspective. Its first scare elicited an actual gasp from me. A couple red herrings make the final twist especially surprising.
"Tuesday the 17th" initially plays heavily into The Blair Witch Project nostalgia. After entering teen slasher flick territory, it's still got a gimmick that prevents it from becoming run of the mill.
Finally, "The Sick Thing That Happened to Emily When She Was Younger" and "10/31/98" are the sort of ghost stories that are essentially tailor-made for me. The latter, in particular, is like a condensed version of the Vicious Brothers' Grave Encounters. Playing back-to-back, they send V/H/S out on a high note.
