165. (20 Aug) ...First Do No Harm (1996, Jim Abraham) 49

Before fervently advocating for epilepsy patients to try the ketogenic diet, there's a tremendous amount of deck-stacking in First Do No Harm. This indictment of the medical community and insurers is oversimplified. Meryl Streep unsurprisingly brings nuance to a martyrly role though she'll never be best-remembered for playing saintly mothers. Allison Janney, as a composite character of unfeeling doctors, fares less well. The film unashamedly plays into too many telefilm clichés. By the end, even Meryl can't gloss over the contrivances.
