150. (12 Aug) Hope Springs (2012, David Frankel) 59

Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones do so much to elevate Hope Springs' script this essentially becomes a feature-length testament to their abilities. Meryl is doing what she does best, letting a scene hinge on a sly smile or hurt look. While Tommy Lee Jones delivers a subtle and genial comedic performance, Meryl breaks your heart. The first half of Hope Springs is downright bleak because of how much she life she breathes into her sorrowful, painfully optimistic character. Because of the generic nature of this genre, it's easy to predict just where the film will end; Streep and Jones make it so worthwhile getting there. (What other pair could make the movie theater scene so damn delightful?) David Frankel steamrolls over some charming moments with lame music cues.
