147. (08 Aug) The Song of Lunch (2011, Niall MacCormick) 54
Christopher Reid's poem about former lovers who meet for an uncomfortable and revealing lunch translates awkwardly to the screen. Even at 50 minutes, MacCormick's adaptation is more pretentious than enlightening. Alan Rickman is unappealing as the male lead, making it difficult to fathom Emma Thompson ever having loved him. His lengthy voiceovers quickly become tiresome. Thompson, fortunately, is incandescent. She has few lines here, but demonstrates what genuine star power can do for an otherwise lackluster production.
