100. (01 Apr) The Divide (2012, Xavier Gens) 50
By mixing apocalyptic horror and ambiguous sci-fi themes, The Divide blends a few too many genre elements for its own good. Strong effects sequences open and close the film. Otherwise, this is a fairly typical low-budget bomb shelter drama. As characters becoming increasing animalistic and cruel the film’s sordidness makes this unnerving enough. The major failing is how poorly defined characters and their relationships are, but as things intensify this relies heavily enough on atmosphere that it doesn’t matter much.
