Carpenter's The Thing is better than I gave it credit. It builds remarkably well, heightening tension for several superb scenes like Russell testing everyone's blood to see who is an alien. Though there are countless fades to black throughout, which keeps this from feeling as taut and unnerving as it ought to, there's no denying that the gory, action-driven sequences suggest just what a gifted genre filmmaker Carpenter is.
