Machete don't blog either ... Probably!?

Thursday, January 6, 2011

I believe Mexploitation is the word that rightly describes this movie. Robert Rodriguez's Machete is definitely not for the light hearted. There are hands and heads being decapitated left, right, and center from the very start. In one of the scenes, likely to attain cult status, Machete kills a man (no surprise there) and then uses his intestines as rope to jump out of a window to safety. Danny Trejo walks through the title role playing a badass Mexican ex-Federale out to get revenge on the drug lord Torrez, played by Steven Seagal, who killed his wife and daughter. The story revolves around the issue of immigration laws, rules, and practices in Texas, US. Don Johnson is a welcome sight playing the leader of a vigilante border control group. Michelle Rodriguez plays her usual "don't mess with me" kind of girl. Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan, Jeff Fahey, Cheech Marin, all have supporting performances that make the movie extremely watchable. The biggest surprise was a somewhat eccentric Robert De Niro playing a state senator out for re-election.

The movie worked on a number of levels for me. Although not a big fan of gore, the action was pretty descent (over the top maybe, but still entertaining). The background music suited the movie brilliantly. The story had its little twists which makes an action movie all the more fun. The humor was dark and straight faced, but it served it's purpose. Most important of all for an action film, Machete has a number of quotable quotes. You can find a few below. I would give the film a debatable 4/5 rating just because I enjoyed it and it's something I wouldn't mind watching again a few years down the line.

Quotes from Machete:

Machete: Machete don't text.

Torrez: You're Machete's girl. I know, cause you're his type.
Sartana: What type is that?
Torrez: Dead.

Preist: [shocked] “I took a vow of peace and now you want me to help you kill all these men?”
Machete: “Yes Padre.”
Priest: [shrugs] “I’ll see what I can do.”

Sartana: I thought Machete don't text.
Machete: Machete improvise.

Booth: Machete sent me a text.
Osiris Ampanpour: What did it say?
Booth: "You just f%#!*? with the wrong Mexican."
