For The Love Of Popcorn!

Friday, December 31, 2010

It has finally happened. After about 25 odd years of movie watching (I'm guessing I must have been around 7 when I first really watched a movie) I finally bought my first pack of popcorn in a theater. So what brought about this change? Surprisingly it was all due to my Calorie Counter iPad application. Recently I realized that popcorn, albeit light with minimum butter, was a good tummy filler and less of a fat maker. This led to microwave popcorn which eventually led to me wanting popcorn while watching a movie (okay it's not exactly light, but ask for it without butter and you are good to eat). It definitely is better than the burgers and crisps that I generally have.

Although, there is another theory that I have worked out as well. This sudden interest in corn definitely didn't originate overnight. What I have also analyzed (thanks to my education in psychology) is that this was a slow process that happened over many years. It all started with corncob which was my initial method of corn intake. Soon I discovered that this was the hard way and required too much work. Food is something that should be easily taken. It's bad enough you have to chew most foods, the last thing I wanted was to bite it off as well. Anyhow luckily around this time kiosks selling corn in a cup came up everywhere. The good part was that for the first time I got to add flavours to corn. Cheese, Chinese, Natural, Masala, and just about another couple of things that I can't remember. Unfortunately I never got addicted to this reheated frozen corn trend. So, there was this void that I felt which let me to try the microwavable popcorn, and that was it. I had tasted it earlier, I'm sure, but this time it was different. Maybe my taste buds have changed. Maybe I realized it's easier to just eat something soft and mushy (and something that looks like a distant and muated relative of a marshmallow) rather than hard and chewy. Maybe, just maybe, I never gave it a second chance. Well now I have and am I happy or what? (Don’t answer that please).

So, after all this time of not wanting popcorn I have finally moved a little bit closer towards becoming a bona fide movie buff/freak.

I do have to say that this recent love for popcorn has its pitfalls. The other day I found myself wanting cheese popcorn and if the thought of sticky hands didn't make me uncomfortable I would be tempted to try caramel or chocolate popcorn as well.

Nevertheless, I'm guessing next I'll be buying one of those pens with an in-built light so I can write my movie thoughts while in the theater. That would also be a good sign that I'm crossing the line into Film Geekdome. When that happens, Dear Friends and Family, I would request a few of you to arrange for an intervention. Till then it’s time for some popped corn.
