049. (03 Feb) The Innocents (1961, Jack Clayton) 35
A shrill, labored Deborah Kerr establishes the tone for The Innocents. She's rarely an easy actress to watch, but her exhausting performance sets up an equally tiring film. Whenever the film attempts to be outright scary, it plays like a haunted attraction at an amusement park, full of loud noises and obvious images. It's horror at its most pedestrian, dressed up to look like a prestige picture. Only the film's light, mysterious first act works.
